Planting trees, growing peace, nurturing hope – SI UN T INITIATIVE FOR INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2026

The Servas International UN Team (SIUNT) is pleased to announce the launch of “Trees for Peace”, an environmental stewardship initiative to commemorate the International Day of Peace on 21 September 2026.
The initiative is being undertaken under the guidance and initiative of Representatives of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), in partnership with Nambale Shiners High School (NSHS), Western Kenya. The UNON representatives will work closely with the school and guide and support the students in implementing this meaningful initiative.
Busia County has low tree and forest cover, estimated at approximately 5–8%, while areas such as Budalangi are particularly vulnerable to seasonal flooding. Against this background, Trees for Peace aims to engage young people in practical environmental stewardship while promoting the values of peace and community responsibility.
As part of the initiative, each participating student will plant an indigenous or fruit tree on 21 September and take responsibility for nurturing it to maturity. SIUNT will monitor the progress of the trees on a quarterly basis and share inspiring stories of change, photographs and experiences of participating students.
The initiative will contribute to Kenya’s national ambition of planting 15 billion trees and provide students with an opportunity to mark the International Day of Peace through a meaningful and lasting contribution to their community and environment.
Trees for Peace also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to quality education, sustainable communities, climate action, life on land and partnerships for sustainable development.
Through this initiative, SIUNT seeks to highlight that peace is also about caring for our environment, strengthening communities and empowering young people to build a sustainable future.
