My first Servas trip in Japan

Exploring Local Neighbourhoods in Japan – My First Servas Trip

By Chan Joy Seng, Servas Singapore

Dear Servas friends from all over the world!

My name is Joy Seng from Singapore, and I am a new Servas member who joined in March 2025.

After becoming a Servas member, I planned my first trip to Japan and extended my stay so that I could spend time meeting and interacting with Japanese Servas members. In preparation for this trip, I emailed close to 30 Servas members living in Tokyo and Yokohama to request for day hosting to show me around their local neighbourhoods.

Eventually, I was able to arrange meetings with 5 Servas members, each of whom shared stories about themselves and the areas where they live. These meetings became a highlight of my trip, as I experienced Servas hospitality as a new member and learned much while they introduced their neighbourhoods in unique and personal ways.

I will let my photos and captions share more about these wonderful experiences. 😊

I met my first Servas host Hide at Kamiooka station in Yokohama, and he treated me to a sumptuous hotpot buffet meal!

As I requested Hide to show me the local neighbourhoods, he showed me the local Gumyōji library which is just opposite a cemetery!

After that, he brought me to Gumyoji Kannondori Shopping Street to take a look at the local shops

Later that evening, I met my second Servas host Satomi. We had a short walk of Yamate neighbourhood where she lives, followed by dinner at izakaya.

Two weeks later, I was in Tokyo and met my third Servas host Wakaba at northern Tokyo of Jujo where she stays.

We started with having tea and biscuits at her house, and had a good chat. She is a retired English teacher and speaks fluent English

She showed me the Jūjō Ginza Shopping Street just 30m from her house. After the walk, she prepared dinner and we had a good chat till late

I met my fourth Servas host Taka at Ariake where he stays. We cycled to explore his extended neighbourhood, even though I don't cycle well

Photo taken with Taka at the Smile Garden with the Telecom Center Building in background. Ariake area is made up of many islands with nice parks

After saying bye to Taka, I travelled to meet my last host Norimasa. He stays very near to Tokyo Disneyland, which you can see behind us

Norimasa brought me to the nearby Kasai-Rinkai Park, and I took the ferris wheel with him. It was the world's tallest ferris wheel in 2001!

After the walk, I went to Norimasa's house. I had a good chat over dinner with him and his wife, together with a friend they invited
