Gathering for peace, with heavy hearts

Gathering for Peace with Heavy Hearts

On this International Peace Day, September 21, 2026, we from the Servas IRAN community gathered around a simple café table, carrying the timeless hope for a world rooted in lasting peace, friendship, and understanding.

If you look at our picture, you will see warm smiles and shared moments. But behind those smiles lies a quiet ache—a storm of grief and unspoken turmoil we carry within. It is hard to celebrate peace when your heart is tethered to Iran: enduring days shadowed by turmoil, living under the persistent threat and anxiety of war, and remembering the innocent lives lost.

We carry the heavy, unhealed memory of the January 8th and 9th, 2026—days stained by what felt like the most catastrophic street killings in contemporary history, when innocent blood ran cold on our streets. A devastating war after happened and hugely destroyed cities and villages all around the country and a lot of people have been affected.

We smile not because we have forgotten, but because gathering together, holding onto our shared humanity, and wishing for a world where no mother mourns and no freedom seeker one is silenced is the only resistance we have left.

Today, more than ever, our wish for peace starts at home: for a free, secure, and tranquil Iran, and a world where peace is not a distant dream, but a lived reality.
