City Meeting in Frankfurt

Trip Report: 2026 City Meeting – Frankfurt

Text & Photos: Susanne Ulrich

For more than 25 years, a group of SERVAS members from Basel, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Leuven, Trier, and Utrecht has been meeting to show one another the beauty of their respective cities. A SERVAS city meeting means cross-border friendships, personal encounters, the exchange of ideas, shared laughter, reminiscing, and making plans for the future. This year marked the 26th gathering, and Frankfurt had the honor of hosting the event for another time.

It was wonderful that some of the original participants from the very beginning were able to join in again. For Rudolf Dederer and Ursula Schauffele in particular, the reunion in Frankfurt offered a lovely opportunity to refresh their SERVAS connections and look back on the many years that have passed.

Although the temperatures in Frankfurt were pretty high over the Pentecost weekend, the visitors were undeterred and fully participated in the planned program:

On Saturday, a guided tour of the Höchst district was on the agenda, where we learned a great deal about the – in Germany - frequently quoted "Schweinepriester" (the Order of St. Anthony). In the evening, we had the chance to taste the famous Frankfurt "Grüne Soße” (Green Sauce), served with a variety of dishes, both with and without meat, in a beautiful allotment garden complex right in the heart of the city.

Sunday offered the option of visiting the Städel Museum, followed by a "skyscraper tour." The evening continued with more Frankfurt specialties, this time of a culinary nature: just as dear as the Riesling wine is to the Rheingau region, the apple wine is to Frankfurt. Consequently, we had an apple wine tasting session with a view of the skyline at sunset, followed by a quiz on Frankfurt and the federal state of Hesse, the ultimate local experience!

Buoyed by the many wonderful encounters - and, not least, by the excellent local brew - old and new friends said their goodbyes on the evening of the third day, hoping for another reunion in 2027.
