Servas Pioneer Riva King did not merely interview perspective hosts and travellers; she informed and interrogated them to be sure they shared the Servas ideals. At her memorial service 10 years ago, an old friend recalled his intake as, “more gruelling than any job interview I ever had.” When asked why she was so strict, she replied: “I am giving you a key to the world.” Servas is a very special key that can open not only doors, but minds and hearts as well. That makes us much more than just a travel club that provides lodging. How are we different from other clubs? See On-going, on-line communication (page 17) and traveller’s reports (14 -15). Bob Luitweiler, Grandpa of Servas, and other members suggest how we can improve.

Gandhi spoke of every friendship helping to build the road to peace. We could also say, with every Servas contact we break down the barriers that separate us. Even if it is only a tiny chip. Read reports from Israel and Malawi (18-19).

It’s time to leave. The editors of SI News have now completed two terms of three years. We have done so with much pleasure, but it is time to hand that pleasure, as well as some frustrations, on to someone else. So far, we have no candidates. A good command of English is required, but professional experience is not necessary. The new editor(s) may change the layout and bring fresh ideas to the newsletter. This is a voluntary position, but office and travel costs are paid. Contact me and/or the Exco members (see page 23).
