Background to the Intelligent Roadmap

Servas was founded in 1949 to put peace-seeking organizations and communities in touch with each other, and to help individuals to explore and understand diverse cultures from everyday life experiences -- "Work, Study, Travel" was the original mantra.

Today Servas travelers often use Servas as a travel/tourism activity while many continue to use Servas to help them develop a bigger picture -- towards nourishing peace among each other, and to develop local or broader initiatives towards global peace.

Claudio Pacchiega, Servas International Host List Coordinator, demonstrates an addition to the usual list of Servas hosts and Day Hosts. With the Turin Peace Documentation Centre "Sereno Regis" Claudio has "opened doors" to new and exciting actions, adventures and discoveries through Servas.

What they have created is a partial "map", an snapshot of possibilities you can discover in Italy.

You can use this "Intelligent Roadmap" to enhance your use of the Italy Servas host list, and as extra information for your visits to Servas families in Italy.

Following this map, you can experience the real, original Servas spirit.

NOTE: Phone numbers and emails AND the PART II have been masked out because of privacy. Contact italy@servas.org or get Italian Hostlist 2006 if you are interested in reaching communities and families. People coming to Latina will be also given the full list in the assembly binder.


The Guide is divided in 2 distinct parts.

BIG CENTERS, accustomed to external visits, can provide documentation and hints for further travel and other in-the-town cultural-educational-peace centers. Usually these places are placed in towns and are easily reachable by train.

COMMUNITIES and FAMILIES, Related to communities, families and places which might be interesting to visit and have a first hand experience with different lifestyle, social and .

Keep in mind that this list is far from being a complete and exhaustive list of places, communities and families that you can find in Italy. It is just one example, a kind of pilot-project, and a suggestion to be made better in the next years.

To help in understanding what a place, community, family is based on, which can be an interesting filtering base for visitors, we have decided to put some flags like:

Doc = Documentation Centers

Cult = Cultural centers

Pea = Peace and nonviolence

Env = Environment (Ecological)

Soc = Social Work, Immigrants, Diversities,

Rel = Religious center

Sol = Solidarity Projects in Developing Countries

Cri = Critical Consumers, Fair Trade

Aut = Auto Production (Biological Productions etc)

Simp = Basic Simple Needs (no technology no luxury)

PCN = Previous Contact Needed

COM = community

FAM = family

DFAM= diverse families living in non-traditional ways
