WHAT WE HAVE HEARD

FROM: Sharon Belden

Dear Servas Friends around the world, Many of us have already donated money to the victims of tsunami, but are wondering if there is more we can do in the name of Servas.

In the coming months and years that part of the world will need much more assistance.

Perhaps the national secretaries and area coordinators in these areas could tell individuals, small or large groups, and national Servas organizations what projects are most needed. Such as: sending material for a school or a (youth) club, donating books for a library, or many other things.

We can talk about this in our national newsletters and at meetings. This is just one idea. I am sure there are many more.

FROM: Siriporn Srithong, Area Coordinator, South East Asia

Dear Geoff and Exco Members, I wish to express my gratitude to all well-wishers who showed thoughtfulness during the time of sadness. I pray for everyone's safety and well-being throughout the year.

FROM: DR. Ramesh Sharma, National Secretary, Servas India

The Tsunami disaster hit us while our national conference was in session and the details of the loss we came to know on the press next day. I have personally visited the affected areas and was involved in distributing clothes, food and medicines to the needy and grief stricken victims of Tamilnadu which was badly affected and caused a lot of lost lives.

I am just back from this trip and getting organized to set up our new SERVAS office in Bangalore with contact address and numbers of the key team members for quick accessibility. ________________________________________________________________

From : M.B. Adikaram, Area Coordinator, South West Asia

Dear Clemens Thank you for your very informative e-mail on relief work carried out and donations and collection of funds for re-building those areas in South Asia. Please discuss with the EXCO and suggest that SERVAS should think of setting up of a disaster fund. This could be a new venture which will be challenging for SERVAS members living all over the world.

I live in Sri Lanka and I think Sri Lanka has got enough emergency relief from the local people as well as from foreign countries. What is needed is long term relief work as most of the areas have no roads, schools, hospitals and houses as those have been completely destroyed. The setting up of an emergency fund could be a new turn in SERVAS activities. This means that better administrative structure will have to be setup contact with individual and donor agencies in their countries will be a very important activity for this new unit.

With best wishes. M. B. Adikaram.
