RUMPLESTILTSKIN STRIKES! Well here is something for you to read. We once had a visitor. I had about 4 calls from our host complaining about this young man, he used to lay in bed and scream for his breakfast – can you believe it? He never left even after the 2 days. So I told them to tell him he was invited stay with me. He came and stayed and at the end of the 2nd day I told him he would have to leave tomorrow and that was the rule of Servas hosting. I asked for his travel papers – I took a red pen and made a long cross through it. I told him it meant he was now forbidden from going to stay with any more hosts in my country because the way he had treated people was unacceptable. He said goodbye and then unbelievably started to try staying with my own grown-up children; my 1 daughter who lived 100km away and had in fact already hosted him. They immediately phoned me to tell me he’d turned up. Now her husband was a police inspector and he took this arrogant young man aside offering him a place he could stay free for a long long time - but it would mean having to be comfortable with bars and locked doors! E.g. jail! ‘Would he be comfortable with that?’ Suddenly like Rumplestiltskin – this young man jumped up and disappeared. Maybe his is belonging to another group somewhere? Or perhaps he needs that site that Mary-Jane has told me about: www.freeloaders.com Susanita – South Africa!!

The big debate - should we advertise or spread the word about Servas and how? Well the easiest way was found in Latina; An Italian man staying at park Hotel came down to enquire about the our conference. He talked to Anna and those at the reception desk, he was so impressed by the idea of our practical peace-building and the friendliness he saw, he decided to join up at once. Anna gave him the address of the web page. Getting new members – easy huh! Marisa – Uruguay.

SO PLEASED, SO HAPPY ☺

I would like to say ‘Muchas Gracias’ for the great positive vote for the youth proposal – it means a lot to me. I am aware of the responsibility and I fully intend to carry out and meet the expectations you have of me. Its going to be hard work but I am ready for it. You will hear a lot about me in the next three years – and I hope it will all be positive as I take Servas forward in a ‘youthful’ direction. This is also my chance to grow personally within Servas and do my little bit for world peace – and that makes me feel good and very hopeful! If you are a delegate and you have a Servas youth who you think may like to be involved in our programme – get them to contact me! pablochufeni@yahoo.com.ar Yours in peace, Pablo Chufeni (Argentina)

POINT OF ORDER

Commander Robert was a US Army officer who was involved in a minor border skirmish with Canada in the last century. He subsequently retired from a military career and later in life made a much more positive contribution to humanity by composing ‘Roberts rules of Order’ These have been in use in their original and amended form ever since. Countless meetings have benefited from his work. They are easily obtainable via the internet.

WHAT A DELIGHTFUL CONFERENCE MOMENT

On Sunday evening I shared the table with Uzbekistan. Anatoly Ionesov was making with considerable skill a crane in origami. He then told me a story of its origin. There was a 10 year old girl in Japan who was diagnosed with leukemia. She was 2 when the Hiroshima bomb went off. She was told that if she made 1000 cranes she would live. She began to make cranes, many 100’s. She unfortunate died having only made 644. Her class mates were so in support of her they continued to make the cranes and they encouraged everyone in the world to make them as a symbol of peace. In the town Hiroshima, in the peace garden, there is a statue of her as a reminder of this girls journeys of adorned with 100s of cranes - a statement of peace. Anatoly has such skill in making these cranes in origami form that he has been asked to teach this to Japanese children.I treasured the colourful crane that Anatoly made. It has though ‘flown’. Has anyone seen it? I would appreciate being re-united with this symbol of peace that has been next to the New Zealand conference name.

Marijke Batenburg (New Zealand).
