Extraordinary GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2006 eGA2006 Update No. 2

Dear National Secretary

The Interim Programme Chair of the extra-ordinary General Assembly has requested a two-three month deferral of the eGA, to allow sufficient time for National Secretaries to input to the agenda.

We in Exco and several volunteers are fully committed to the eGA, and at the same time we are absolutely firm that it must be a well-prepared, high quality meeting. In sharing this news, we intend to signal our complete commitment to the eGA process.

Some group work has begun on important goals, including improvement of the Statutes and Members Distant Vote, and more is planned.

Meantime several suggestions have also come to Exco, calling for improved translations, and also improved facilitation of networking among interested National Secretaries and their teams, so as to allow enough time for good quality inputs from National Secretaries.

This brief deferral would give opportunities for additional contributions beyond those of the over twenty or so who have already volunteered support, etc. It would also allow distant Member Groups, including those who do not now have sufficient resources to fund delegates to the eGA to make a good big work effort on the teams preparing discussion papers, options, etc. We hope the deferral will continue to build momentum, rather than forcing a too-early close to the important work now being undertaken or offered by National Secretaries.

Unfortunately, the venue originally proposed, in Frankfurt Germany, is available on only strict terms and conditions which do not provide for such a delay.

In the meantime, however, some National Secretaries have furthered the considerable effort initially undertaken by Servas Germany to find a good, proven location at reasonable cost with flexible dates and with good volunteer support.

The most advanced of these is in Italy, a venue in close proximity to Rome. The venue has been used by Servas Italy before, with good results.

Exco is in the process of evaluating this venue and another, now.

Any additional information you may have would be welcome if received within the next seven days.

Further announcements and background will be provided, shortly.

In peace and friendship

Geoff Maltby President – Servas International
